Congressional Migrant Workers Scholarship Program (CMWSP)
Congressional Migrant Workers Scholarship Program or CMWSP is another scholarship grant given to migrant workers and/or their immediate relatives who will pursue four- or five-year baccalaureate courses in the fields of Science and Technology. To qualify for the CMWSP, the applicant must pass the examination conducted by the Department of Science and Technology or DOST.
Successful applicants may receive up to PHP 60,000 per academic year in financial assistance, which is funded by the Philippine Charity Sweepstakes Office (PCSO). This amount is intended to help cover the costs of tuition and other educational expenses.
The program was created in line with Section 37, Article IX of Republic Act No. 8042, also known as the Migrant Workers and Overseas Filipinos Act of 1995. The application period for CMWSP typically opens in June every school year, with the deadline for submission falling in the first week of August, or as announced by the Research and Operations Coordinating Services (ROCS) based on the schedule of the DOST examination.
Applicants must ensure that all documentary requirements are complete before submission, as incomplete applications will not be accepted. Each application undergoes a thorough evaluation and verification process. It’s important to note that being approved at this stage only qualifies the applicant to take the DOST National Competitive Examination—it does not yet guarantee the scholarship award.
Since the program was launched in 1999, the CMWSP has supported and produced a total of 213 graduates. Many of these scholars have completed degrees in high-demand fields such as Information Technology, Electronics and Communications Engineering, Biochemistry, and Chemical Engineering. These graduates have attended some of the most prestigious universities and colleges across the country, further highlighting the program’s success in empowering OFW families through access to quality education in technical and scientific fields.
