A Message from the Heart: How MAKULAY Embodies the Spirit of Filipino Art and Community (2025)

Message Makulay Founders

Message

In a message from its founder, Mr. Romano Roman, MAKULAY Filipino Artist Guild was built not just to promote art—but to preserve identity, empower creativity, and celebrate the soul of the Filipino people. What began as a shared dream among a handful of passionate individuals has evolved into a vibrant, global community of artists, performers, writers, chefs, and visionaries—each united by a shared love for culture and creative expression.

At its core, MAKULAY is more than just an artist guild. It is a family. A movement. A beacon of Filipino culture and heritage, illuminating the world with its collective talent and unwavering spirit.

Message Romano

The Essence of Art: A Voice of the Filipino Soul

As Mr. Romano so clearly stated, “Art has always represented more than just color on canvas, rhythm in music, or movement in dance—it is a people’s essence.” This belief is the very foundation of MAKULAY. Art is not simply a product; it is a reflection of our identity, our struggles, our joys, and our resilience.

Whether it’s a portrait painted in oil, a poem written in Tagalog, or a traditional dish recreated abroad, Filipino artistry carries with it the history, values, and emotions of our people. MAKULAY ensures that this essence remains alive and thriving, especially for Overseas Filipino Workers (OFWs) who continue to carry our heritage with pride wherever they are in the world.

Creating a Space for Filipino Talent to Thrive

When MAKULAY was first envisioned, the goal was simple but powerful: to create an environment where Filipino talent could flourish, even thousands of kilometers from home. For many OFWs, opportunities for creative expression are rare. Time, resources, and community support are often limited.

MAKULAY changes that. It provides a platform for Filipino artists abroad, offering space, support, and recognition to painters, dancers, writers, performers, and even culinary artists who long for connection through culture. It also serves as an outlet for emotional healing, self-expression, and cultural empowerment.

Through art exhibits, workshops, performances, and online showcases, MAKULAY helps bring to light the talents of Filipinos who may not have had the chance to shine back home. It is a space where every voice matters, and every creation contributes to a bigger story—the story of the Filipino diaspora.

A Movement of Color, Connection, and Cultural Pride

True to its name, “Makulay”—which means “colorful” in Filipino—this movement embodies the diverse and dynamic nature of Filipino creativity. Each brushstroke, lyric, and dance step echoes the richness of our traditions and the boldness of modern Filipino artistry.

As Mr. Romano emphasized, MAKULAY is a movement that carries the brilliant colors of the Philippines, created by the hands and hearts of kababayans living overseas. The guild is living proof that geography does not determine cultural connection. Despite the miles, Filipino artists abroad remain deeply rooted in their heritage.

Taking a lead from formal to contemporary art forms, MAKULAY encourages individuals to express authentically about our homelands and where they have come from. This allows celebration of a rooted and evolving culture that draws energy from the past but has the courage to envision the future.

Unity, Gratitude, and a Shared Vision

The heart of Mr. Romano’s message is a cultivated feeling of gratitude and collectivism. Mr. Romano thanks the artists represented in MAKULAY, and the choirs of supporters and partners, who also share the commitment toward the vision: “For all artists, supporters, and partners: thank you for being a part of this vision.” Mr. Romano reminds us that art is not created in isolation but fostered and shaped by the people of our community.

Through collaboration, mutual support, and a shared purpose, MAKULAY has grown into an international network of artists bound by their Filipino identity. It is a family where everyone has a role and a story.

Guided by Heritage, Driven by Heart

Mr. Romano’s message is a gentle reminder and a powerful call to action to inspire, empower, and uplift each other through our creativity! As MAKULAY moves forward, it moves forward with the colors of our heritage and the warmth of the Filipino soul.

The journey of MAKULAY is far from over. The guild expands to everyone who joins us, and each shared exhibit and shared story continues to grow its impact! What began as a dream has become a reality—and that reality is filled with color, meaning, and purpose.

Whether you are a Filipino artist, an art enthusiast, or someone looking to reconnect with your roots, MAKULAY welcomes you. It is where your creativity is valued, your heritage is honored, and your voice is heard.

Carrying the Colors of Culture: A Message from MAKULAY Co-Founder Mr. Dave Constantino

Art and culture are not just hobbies or pastimes for Filipinos—they are a way of life. They are the heartbeat of a nation prosperous in creativity, passion, and storytelling. With his heartfelt message, Mr. Dave Constantino, co-founder of the MAKULAY Filipino Artist Guild, reminds us all that Filipino art and cultural expression play an essential role in building national identity, creating community, and inspiring future generations.

Through MAKULAY, artists worldwide—especially Overseas Filipino Workers (OFWs)—have found a vibrant home to express their creativity and proudly showcase their heritage. This guild is more than a group; it is a movement fueled by Filipino talent, cultural pride, and artistic excellence.

Filipino Creativity: A Legacy of Excellence

People all over the world know Filipinos to be born artists. A natural propensity for creativity exists in their cultural heritage, from singing, dancing, and playing an instrument to writing, photography, and the visual arts. Mr. Constantino affirms the truth in this tradition by recognizing the thousands of Filipinos who have made their mark as singers, writers, musicians, and painters as they continue their legacy on the world stage.

This rich heritage is now what MAKULAY hopes to extend, allowing artists to explore their talents further and showcase them more broadly. Every artwork produced and labelled as MAKULAY will indicate the creative brilliance of the Filipino soul.

Art as a Source of Joy and National Pride

The statement highlights the fun and fulfillment artists experience as individuals and as members of the Filipino community. Whether a colorful painting, a stirring performance, or a narrative poem, MAKULAY artists have all contributed to a collective pride in being Filipino.

MAKULAY also aims to create and amplify pride in national identity by developing each artwork to express Filipino identity. Each piece stands as a cultural time machine, depicting the stories of the type of people we are and where we come from. To quote Mr. Constantino, “Cultural art, like the sail of a boat always catching wind, will always remain alive in the blood of every Filipino.”

Creating with Purpose: Art That Reflects Identity

Through photography, digital art, and painting, the artists of MAKULAY create meaningful work that reflects both personal and national identity. Every brushstroke, frame, and pixel is a declaration of cultural heritage and artistic freedom.

MAKULAY members actively preserve history while creating it. They are storytellers and historians who embed their lived experiences into art that transcends borders. This trait enables Filipino culture to stay alive, relevant, and accessible to youth.

A Community Rooted in Solidarity and Leadership

The strength of MAKULAY is its community. Co-founders like Mr. Dave Constantino and Mr. Romano Roman, as well as a dedicated board of stewards composed of Vic Llaguno, BE Artist, Bea Carvajal, Jalil Marvin, Rolly Patilla, and Fred Balle, represent a community of seeds of visionaries and creators working together through the many leadership, mentorship, and growth opportunities of MAKULAY.

Mr. Constantino’s message is earnest and conveys a sense of gratefulness and unity. MAKULAY is not simply the founders; every member, every supporter, and every piece of collaborative work represents a thriving organization. Our mission is simply to help Filipino artists, help one another constructively in creative endeavors, and honour the values that unite us.

A Cultural Movement with Global Impact

MAKULAY has used Filipino culture but transcended Filipino cultures, traditions, practices, and ways of being, resulting in a transnational artistic movement. Through cultural heritage and creative expressions, the guild creates a creative diasporic geography that connects Filipinos, despite their location.

This vision fulfills cultural diplomacy’s goals by internationally promoting Philippine arts and culture. As OFWs chase opportunities abroad to migrate, start a career, or even seek connection, MAKULAY provides an opportunity for maintaining their traditional roots in a modern cultural and artistic expression.

Long Live the Filipino Spirit

Mr. Dave Constantino closed his message with powerful words: “Long live the Filipino spirit! Thank you, and may Almighty bless us all.” These are not just farewell messages but also a call to action. The message goes beyond art as aesthetics; it is also a responsibility, a gift, and a legacy.

To be a part of MAKULAY is to be part of something bigger: a movement that uplifts, unites, and colors the world with the beauty of Filipino creativity. Whether you are an artist, a patron, or simply someone who believes in the power of cultural identity, MAKULAY welcomes you with open arms and a colorful vision of what art can achieve.
