OFW IN KUWAIT : Deployment Ban and Temporary Ban

 

 

 

 

 

 

The Philippine government imposed a total deployment ban to Kuwait after a National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) autopsy revealed the grim circumstances surrounding the death of Filipino worker Jeanelyn Villavende in December 2019.

 

On the killing of Filipina domestic worker Jeanelyn Padernal Villavende, Secretary Abdullah Mama-o expressed his appreciation to the Kuwaiti government for the actions that it has undertaken to bring to justice the suspects in the case, including the immediate arrest of OFW Villavende’s employers.

 

To show Kuwait’s commitment in the case, Kuwaiti Deputy Foreign Minister Khaled Al-Jarallah said that his government is willing to allow investigators from the Philippines to join the investigation in Kuwait of the murder of OFW Villavende.

 

Both the Philippine and Kuwaiti sides expressed hope that issues concerning the rights and protections for the more than 150,000 Filipino domestic workers in Kuwait will soon be resolved through the soon-to-be-convened Joint Committee Meeting on the 2018 Philippines-Kuwait Agreement on the Employment of Domestic Workers, according to our Philippine Embassy.

 

 

Secretary Abdullah  Mama-o met with more than 100 members of the Filipino community in Kuwait. Issues discussed included the Philippine government’s contingency plan amid tensions in the Middle East, and the decision of the Philippine Overseas Employment Administration’s governing board to impose a ban on the deployment of newly hired OFWs bound for Kuwait.

Mama-o, who was accompanied by other Philippine officials, said the Duterte administration will exert all efforts to safeguard the welfare of all Filipinos in the Middle East Also, he gave the assurances of President Duterte that the Philippine government will exert all efforts to safeguard the safety and welfare of all Filipinos in the Middle East.

 

During the Filipino community meeting, Chargé d’Affaires Noordin Pendosina Lomondot assured our kababayans in Kuwait that the embassy is preparing for any scenario in case the situation in the region does not improve.

 

He disclosed to Filipino community leaders details of the Embassy’s Contingency Plan, such as possible evacuation routes and the names of area coordinators. Meanwhile, Cacdac also responded to queries and concerns from OFWs in Kuwait.
