Islam is the major religion in Kuwait and values of the faith are greatly respected in the Emirate. Any sign of disrespect towards religious beliefs or practices is considered deeply offensive and most often than not, will result in a heavy fine and / or imprisonment. However, all expatriates are allowed to practice other religion and such are respected too by the Kuwaitis.
The following are a few simple rules with regards to Islam and its teachings;
- Muslims pray five times a day and it is very common that all mosques call people to pray through a speaker system. Daily prayers are very important to them and as kabayans / expatriates, we are expected to observe silence.
- We must always be aware that drivers who are not close to a mosque, may stop at a convenient place to pray privately.
- Now that it is the holy month of Ramadan, Muslims fast from dawn to sunset. In observance of this practice for a month, eating, drinking, smoking, playing loud music and dancing in public places during daylight hours are strictly forbidden and punishable by law, and non-Muslims are not an exception.
- Also during Ramadan, Muslims celebrate the breaking of their fast with an evening meal called Iftar. Many hotels and restaurants throughout Kuwait provide Iftar buffets in the evening.
