60 Minutes to save the Earth most popularly known as Earth Hour, is a worldwide event organized by the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) and held towards the end of March every year.
The occasion encourages households and businesses to turn off their unnecessary lights for one hour to raise global awareness about the need to take action on our predicament of climate change. It was done mainly to reduce carbon dioxide emissions from fossil fuels which is believed to be the cause of global warming. Earth Hour was first celebrated in Sydney, Australia in 2007 and it became an annual date to remember.
In 2008, a group of university students from the Faculty of Engineering and Petroleum, at Kuwait University, participated for the first time in the Earth Hour campaign in 2008. In 2009, the State of Kuwait, composed of more than 20 malls and private organizations participated in Earth Hour along with 88 other countries. Kuwait Towers and Liberation Tower were featured in the event and more than 20 malls and private organizations participated.
In Earth Hour 2010, a Kuwait team composed of more than 35 private organizations, malls, hotels and together with 128 other countries participated in the event while in 2011, more than 90 organizations from Kuwait were present.
Earth Hour 2013 was held last March 23rd, Saturday wherein participants continue to do their share in Saving Mother Earth.
