The long-awaited $RON Token is finally available to trade!
Hong Kong-based exchange FTX.com said they were going to list SkyMavis’ $RON token in their Perpetual Futures market, which is where you can buy and sell futures. This surprised (and confused) people because the long-awaited Ronin token hasn’t been made yet. In early November 2021, the Katana decentralized exchange was launched, and many people, including myself, have been working hard to earn $RON tokens by lending money to the exchange. The tokens we’ve earned aren’t yet available for us to claim.
A futures market is a way for people to bet on how much an asset will be worth in the future. In this example, the Ronin token will be worth more in the future (in this case, the Ronin token). Most of you already do this when you buy Ethereum today in the hope that its value will rise in the future. This is probably what happens when you buy $ETH and hold on to it until the price reaches your goal, or sell it if the price drops too low and you need to keep some of your original money. In a futures market, on the other hand, you don’t own the underlying asset; you bet on how much it will be worth in the future. As soon as you choose to cash out, you’ll get the counter-currency, which is usually the US dollar or a stablecoin. We call these types of markets “derivatives,” because their prices are based on the real-world prices of the assets they’re based on. To help traders who want to learn more about the history of crypto derivatives, Kraken has a great paper on the subject that you can read here.
This word is used to talk about a type of futures market that Bitmex started using in 2016. It has been around for a long time, but Bitmex started using it in 2016. Normal futures always have an expiration date, where the deal ends and the trader gets the results of their bet. It’s not for the faint of heart to trade like this. Instead, Perpetual Futures stay open for as long as the trader wants them to, until they press “Market Close” or they lose the bet, so to speak. “PERP” prices also tend to be closer to the real spot market because you aren’t trying to predict the price at a specific time in the future.
There are only a small number of people in FTX’s RON-PERP group, so it doesn’t really show how the whole market works. The Ronin chain transfers 15% of the world’s NFTs, so in order to get the most “accurate” price for $RON, we should wait for it to be traded on other exchanges so that the real price discovery can happen.
