It is my belief that angels do not only reside in Heaven. They are everywhere – and Kuwait is one place where we can find them. Fellow Filipinos who struggled back home but when they have found the opportunity to uplift their lives and their families, they continue to extend their good intentions thru selfless volunteerism to assist distressed OFWs and any less fortunate person who needs help. This series is dedicated to angels in disguise living in Kuwait while spreading their wings of compassion and love for fellowmen. Ms. Almira Catalan Matus is a native of Caloocan City and a resident of Obando, Bulacan. The eldest among four (4) siblings, she lost her father at an early age, instantly becoming the driving force of their family alongside her mother, whom Ms. Almira genuinely respects and admires. She recalled how the untimely death of two (2) of her younger siblings beleaguered the already difficult family situation but that didn’t stop Ms. Almira from working hard to uplift her family’s plight and achieve her goals. She worked from 8 AM to 5 PM and attended her class from 6 to 9 in the evening.
Eight years ago, she came to Kuwait with the hope of earning and saving about Php 10,000.00 with the thought of returning home and starting a business. But God has other plans for Ms. Almira – better plans.
Thankful that Kuwait is open to religious practices of Christians, Ms. Almira has been guided by the Word of God and some of these are; Jeremiah 33:3 “Call unto me, and I will answer thee, and see thee great and mighty things, which thou knowest not.” Proverbs 3:5-6 “Trust in the Lord with all your heart, And lean not on your own understanding; In all your ways acknowledge Him, And He shall direct your paths.” Matthew 6:33 “But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things shall be added to you.” Although Ms. Almira is grateful to the Lord for granting her work at a good and reputable company here in Kuwait and for all the blessings she has received and still continues to receive, she gives back thru selfless volunteerism, assistance to the sick and giving happiness to less fortunate children in her hometown.
One Filipina cancer patient at Kuwait Cancer Control Center (KCCC) has been under Ms. Almira’s guidance spiritually, emotionally and these factors help lead any patient on the road to recovery, not forgetting to acknowledge the Almighty Giver of life – our Lord. The woman is waiting for her soon homecoming to the Philippines.
Ms. Almira Catalan Matus is married and fondly called Ers-Ers back home while here in Kuwait, she is known as Cat Ara. We do not need to be very rich in order for us to share what we can and what we have with people who are in a difficult and tight situation. We just need to open our hearts, our eyes, our mind that volunteerism is not a duty, but a call for all of us to heed. From Diary ni Gracia, I wish Ms. Almira more blessings to come for her.
