The investing and trading landscape in Philippine equities has changed with the onset of the pandemic. President Monzon, CEO of the Philippine Stock Exchange, said that 2021 is a “positive” year for the stock market as more firms will turn to equities to raise capital as banks keep lending requirements tight

At the end of August, foreign investors accounted for only 33.1 percent of trading turnover, a 30.8 percent decrease from their volume contribution in the same period a year ago. Despite the exit of foreign investors from the Philippine equities due to the threat of the COVID-19 virus, the PSE’s daily average trading volume increased by 22.3 percent by the end of August, which means the market has been able to sustain volumes, thanks to local investors.

With the advancement of financial technology and online trading platforms, investing has become more convenient and accessible. Easy-to-use platforms like Investa, eToro and COL Financial teach Filipinos how to invest their money wisely. Furthermore, as more individual investors participate in the stock market, they assist new and established businesses in raising capital to open new business opportunities, thereby accelerating the country’s economic recovery.

It is hoped that more Filipinos will invest in the stock market, but we don’t want them to do so blindly. Any positive financial outlook requires awareness and literacy. This pandemic demonstrated the importance of financial preparedness, and it is intended to remain at the forefront of the country’s investor education initiatives.
