Rumi’s Moving Water poem
When you do things from your soul, you feel a river moving in you, a joy.
When actions come from another section, the feeling disappears.
Don’t let others lead you. They may be blind or, worse, vultures.
Reach for the rope of God. And what is that?
Putting aside self-will.
Because of willfulness people sit in jail, the trapped bird’s wings are tied,
fish sizzle in the skillet.
The anger of police is willfulness.
You’ve seen a magistrate inflict visible punishment.
Now see the invisible.
If you could leave your selfishness,
You would see how you’ve been torturing your soul.
We are born and live inside black water in a well.
How could we know what an open field of sunlight is?
Don’t insist on going where you think you want to go.
Ask the way to the spring.
Your living pieces will form a harmony.
There is a moving palace that floats in the air
With balconies and clear water flowing through
Infinity everywhere, yet contained under a single tent.

This poem has become one of my guidelines and source of inspiration during everyday life as an Overseas Filipino Worker (OFW) here in Kuwait. There are times that due to my busy schedule and different situations I encounter, I want to hold on to someone greater, someone stronger. In any time and place, whatever the circumstances are, holding God’s hands have helped me through the most trying and tiring times as Overseas Filipino Workers (OFWs).

Very inspiring poem. I was moved.
Continue to be inspired and continue to inspire other people. Kudos to you.
God is always there for us. Reading poems inspires me a lot.
Deeper yet inspiring. Something we barely need. I’ve got to admire this!
I fell inlove with the poem. Every word defines something. It touches one’s heart when you read it. God will always be with us.
Poetry, lovely words, can really give strength to people who need it the most during trying times of their life. Stay strong always.
It’s really hard to be away from your family, it’s good that you were able to express all your feelings about it with beautiful words and in a poem.
Hi! Reading a poem reminds me of my college days. I did a number of sonnets and other poems during my Creative Writing subject, so yeah, deja vu! 😛
The first sentence captured my soul, “When you do things from your soul, you feel a river moving in you, a joy.” Really, this poem gives inspiring and motivating value to one’s way of living.
Amen, Gracia! I agree! and I love your poem. especially the caption from the image..:)
Amen! 🙂 Indeed it is God who will always be with us to strengthen us in tough situations. God bless in your work in Kuwait! Kudos to our OFW kababayan! 🙂
