Amidst the heart of Kuwait is a colorful patchwork of Filipino art inspired by MAKULAY, the abbreviation for Malikhaing Kulturang Layag, a Filipino artists’ guild that acts as a lighthouse to Overseas Filipino Workers (OFWs), where the fusion of creativity and cultural pride coincides.

The Founding of MAKULAY

MAKULAY was founded in May 2013 by its founder, passionate artist Romano O. Roman, to create a place for OFWs in Kuwait that allowed them to celebrate artistic practices and their cultural identities. The word Makulay, meaning colorful in Filipino, embodies the organization’s mission to add color and diversity to the members’ lives through art.

A Sail Towards Cultural Expression

“Layag,” which means “sail,” symbolizes freedom and travel. For MAKULAY, it represents a commitment to travel through or navigate its members’ emotional and mental landscape through creativity. MAKULAY utilizes the power of art to help OFWs travel between cultures, preserving Filipino culture while enjoying a greater appreciation of Kuwaiti culture.

Fostering a Creative Community

MAKULAY stands out for its inclusive approach, welcoming both Filipinos and non-Filipinos who share a passion for art and culture. The guild offers a supportive environment where members can engage in various art forms, including painting, sculpture, graffiti, and more. Through workshops, exhibitions, and collaborations, MAKULAY nurtures the talents of its members, fostering a sense of belonging and mutual appreciation.

MAKULAY has a unique approach. It is the only guild that welcomes both Filipino and non-Filipino art lovers. Within a safe community, the guild allows its members to follow their art in differing variations, whether painting, sculpture, or even graffiti. Through workshops, exhibitions, and collaborations, MAKULAY nurtures the talents of its members, fostering a sense of belonging and mutual appreciation.

Collaborations and Cultural Impact

MAKULAY actively participates in cultural events and exhibitions, often collaborating with organizations like MASA (Malalayang Alagad ng Sining at Adhikain) and the Philippine Embassy in Kuwait. These partnerships have led to successful events such as the “Malayang Sining” exhibit, which showcased diverse interpretations of freedom and national pride through various art forms.

Empowering Through Art

Beyond artistic expression, MAKULAY recognizes the therapeutic benefits of art for OFWs facing the challenges of working abroad. By providing a creative outlet, the guild helps members cope with homesickness and cultural adjustments, turning art into a source of healing and empowerment.

A Global Movement

MAKULAY’s efforts contribute to a broader global movement to preserve and promote Filipino culture among diaspora communities. Through its initiatives, the guild not only strengthens the cultural identity of its members but also fosters cross-cultural understanding and appreciation within Kuwait’s diverse society.
