The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People by Stephen R. Covey

The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People, Covey tells the example of a professor who uses a simple yet effective illustration to emphasize the significance of priority. The professor places a large jar on the table and fills it with large rocks until it appears complete. He then asks the class if the pot is complete, to which they all concur.

On the other hand, the professor takes out a bag of small stones and pours them into the jar. The pebbles fill in the gaps between the large rocks. He asks if the pot is whole again; this time, the class hesitates but agrees.

Finally, the professor removes a bag of sand from his bag and pours it into the jar. The remaining gaps are filled with sand. The class has realized that the pot is indeed complete. The professor uses this example to convey that the large rocks represent the most important aspects of life, such as family, health, and personal development. They may only fit later if they are prioritized.

“If I really want to improve my situation, I can work on the one thing over which I have control – myself.”

10 Lessons from the book “The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People” by Stephen R. Covey

  1. Be Proactive (Habit 1): Take initiative and responsibility for your life. Instead of reacting to circumstances, be proactive by making choices based on your values and principles.
  2. Begin with the End in Mind (Habit 2): Define your long-term goals and values before taking action. Envisioning the desired outcome helps guide your actions and decisions in alignment with your values.
  3. Put First Things First (Habit 3): Prioritize important, not just urgent, tasks. To achieve long-term success, prioritize tasks that correspond with your aims and values rather than merely reacting to urgent demands.
  4. Think Win-Win (Habit 4): Seek mutually beneficial solutions in interactions with others. Adopting a win-win mindset promotes collaboration, trust, and the development of positive relationships.
  5. Seek First to Understand, Then to Be Understood (Habit 5): Listen empathetically before expressing your thoughts. Understanding others’ perspectives enhances communication and fosters better relationships.
  6. Synergize (Habit 6): Collaborate with others to create solutions more significant than the sum of their parts. Synergy involves valuing and respecting the differences in people and combining strengths to achieve shared goals.
  7. Sharpen the Saw (Habit 7): Renew and balance yourself physically, mentally, emotionally, and spiritually. Taking time for self-renewal enhances your capacity to implement the other habits effectively.
  8. Begin with “I” (Paradigm Shift): Realize that you can change and improve situations by changing your mindset. Shifting from a reactive perspective to a proactive one is crucial for personal effectiveness.
  9. Circles of Influence and Concern: Focus your energy on things within your control (Circle of Influence) rather than things outside your control (Circle of Concern). Being proactive involves expanding your Circle of Influence.
  10. The Maturity Continuum: Move from dependence to independence and, ultimately, interdependence. Independence is the ability to care for oneself, while interdependence involves effective collaboration and teamwork.

My thoughts

In Covey’s example, a professor uses a jar filled with large rocks, small stones, and sand to show that prioritizing important aspects of life (the rocks) ensures they fit in our schedules. If we fill our time with less critical tasks first, we might miss out on what truly matters.
