What is an Apostille?
An Apostille is a certificate issued by the Department of Foreign Affairs for documents they have verified as original or legitimate. It has replaced the previous “Red Ribbon,” which was easy to replicate and imitate by counterfeiters.
The Apostille Convention is relevant when both the nation that issued the public document and the government where it is intended to be utilized are signatories to the Convention. For an up-to-date list of all countries in the “Apostille Convention,” please refer to this link.
In countries that do not participate in the Apostille Convention, such as Finland, Germany, and Greece (which have raised objections to the Philippines’ accession to the Convention), the Philippine Apostille cannot be directly employed. In such instances, documents going to or coming from these countries will necessitate authentication by the relevant Embassy or Consulate.
The Apostille now includes new features such as security threads, a scan-capable chip, and an online verification option to prevent easy forgery and imitation by fixers. They are used when you need to present your documents to agencies and institutions outside the Philippines. Typically, birth certificates, marriage certificates, CENOMAR (Certificate of No Marriage), LTO (Land Transportation Office) certificates, NBI (National Bureau of Investigation) clearances, and school records require an Apostille to be recognized in other countries.
The most common mistake among our fellow citizens is bringing their original documents such as birth certificates, marriage certificates, CENOMAR, LTO certificates, NBI clearances, and school records without an Apostille. These will not be accepted in any transaction.
You can obtain it by presenting your original documents to the Department of Foreign Affairs, but not all DFA offices provide this service. Only the Manila, Pampanga, Cebu, and Davao offices offer Apostille Authentication services.
Personal appearance is required for document authentication or Apostille processing. Someone abroad must provide a Special Power of Attorney (SPA) to authorize someone to go on their behalf.
Apostilles are used in almost all processes abroad. Just having the original documents is insufficient; an Apostille is always required.
Through LBC document processing services, your documents can be conveniently, securely, and quickly processed. You can refer below to how to process your documents in LBC:
