In this interview, we have the privilege of engaging in a profound dialogue a highly respected and influential figure in TSOK, Sir Honesto Doctolero. This conversation unveils the myriad of exceptional initiatives, visionary projects, and noteworthy achievements undertaken by TSOK. Through the lens of Mr. Doctolero’s perspectives, we will be informed of how this organization has left an indelible mark on the lives of Filipino educators residing in Kuwait.
I. Major Initiatives and Projects of TSOK
Can you share some successful outcomes officers of TSOK accomplishment in your term?
“The most significant achievement is that we have already produced more than 100 professional teachers. That’s the primary accomplishment of our organization. Secondly, we have been highly active in community service and are capable of providing assistance to our members. We have access to job opportunities, as I mentioned earlier. Some of our members used to work in restaurants or unrelated fields, but because of our organization, they were informed about job vacancies in schools, giving them the chance to work in their chosen profession. Many of them have transitioned from jobs as household workers or restaurant employees to positions in schools. For example, there’s Sir Arnel, who used to work as a crew member and is now employed in a school. There are many success stories like his. Remember Ma’am Noba, our current president? She used to work as a secretary in a company. She approached me for help in pursuing a career in education, and now she’s a Physical Education teacher. There are numerous similar stories. We’ve created job opportunities, produced licensed professional teachers, and extended assistance to our members. Through programs in collaboration with other professionals, we’ve also been able to address mental health issues, such as post-exam stress, through activities like sports days. Furthermore, we actively collaborate with OWWA (Overseas Workers Welfare Administration).
II. Fostering Teamwork and Collaboration
Can you provide insights into the relationship between officers and the leadership team within TSOK?
“Every leader has their own style of leadership or principles that guide them. We strategize on how to do things, just like during my presidency when I was quite lenient because I encouraged members. I didn’t want any toughness within the organization. I wanted everyone to be happy. I didn’t see it as a regular organization, unlike other groups.”
What is the organization culture like TSOK and how do you foster teamwork and growth?
“It’s more about willpower and leadership, then guiding the Community-Based Learning (CBL) initiative. Everyone should be aware of the CBL, and everyone should understand their duties and responsibilities. If the leadership has good intentions, they will be willing to assist the organization or its members. So, it’s essential for the leaders to be determined, trustworthy, especially when it comes to finances and decision-making. They should be fair and focused on the welfare of the members, particularly since they know that the members have come to Kuwait. We are here to help them, not to ask for their help. This aligns with our initial intentions, so that whatever plans the organization has can be implemented with fewer financial and stress-related challenges due to our collaborative efforts. I firmly believe that if everyone cooperates, the workload, finances, and stress will all be reduced. That’s the essence of effective leadership.”
III. Key Messages for Next Officers and Reviewers
What is your message for the next officers and for the readers as well?
“I hope that the incoming officers will uphold the principles of the organization. They should prioritize honesty and be dedicated to serving the members rather than seeking personal gain. It’s important for them to communicate effectively and empower both the members and fellow officers. Trustworthiness should be a cornerstone of their actions.”
What is your message to the coming reviewers?
“To the future reviewers, I advise you to study diligently and review extensively. Prepare yourself physically, mentally, and spiritually for the challenges ahead. Your determination to overcome obstacles before and after the exam is crucial, as lacking this aspect might lead to failure. Allocate sufficient time for your review efforts.”
III. Future Direction of Sir Honesto Doctolero
What is the overall vision or future Direction that officers of TSOK are working towards?Ā Or you as a founder in your previous interim?
“To collaborate with other professional organizations, especially in the name of teachers, not only in Kuwait but also expanding our reach to other Middle East countries, at least.
It’s similar to expanding and establishing what we might call ‘chapters.’ The idea is to create organized groups in different locations. In Middle Eastern countries, especially those where domestic workers face significant challenges, there are many graduates in the field of education.”
