Celebrating Freedom: Filipino Independence Day in Kuwait 2022

On June 12, 2022, the Philippines celebrated its 124th Independence Day, also known as “Araw ng Kasarinlan” (Day of Freedom). This annual national holiday commemorates the Philippines’ independence from Spanish colonial rule in 1898. Over a century has passed since this historic moment. Yet, Filipinos in the homeland and those scattered across the globe continue to find innovative and heartfelt ways to pay homage to this significant milestone.

Historical Background of Philippine Independence Day:

The origins of Philippine Independence Day can be traced back to June 12, 1898, when General Emilio Aguinaldo hoisted the Philippine flag, signifying the declaration of the country’s independence. The iconic eight-rayed golden sun on the flag was crafted by three remarkable women: Marcela Agoncillo, Lorenza Agoncillo, and Delfina Herbosa. These eight rays symbolize the initial provinces in the Philippines that rose against Spanish colonial dominance.
Following this historic flag-raising event, the inaugural performance of the Philippine national anthem, Lupang Hinirang, was rendered by the San Francisco de Malabon marching band.
Initially, Independence Day in the Philippines was celebrated on July 4, in line with the United States’ observance of the day. It was President Diosdado Macapagal who, in 1962, moved the commemoration to June 12, marking the end of Spanish colonial rule.

Celebrating Philippine Independence Day in Kuwait:

Despite the geographical distance that separates the Filipino community in Kuwait from their homeland, their enthusiasm for celebrating Philippine Independence Day remains unwavering. The festivities took place at Al Sahel Sports Club in Abu Halifa, Kuwait, on June 10, 2022, under the theme “Kalayaan 2022: Pagsuong sa Hamon ng Panibagong Bukas” (Freedom 2022: Facing the Challenges of Tomorrow).
This marked the first in-person Independence Day celebration organized by the Filipino community since the onset of the pandemic. The event was a joyous gathering, attracting numerous Filipinos and organizations from various corners of Kuwait. They convened not only to commemorate Independence Day but also to nurture a sense of camaraderie and strengthen community bonds.
Various activities were held simultaneously, such as “Zumba ng Kalayaan,” aimed at promoting physical fitness and well-being. Cultural performances, like “Tanghalan ng Bayan,” showcased the rich talents of overseas Filipino workers (OFWs). The “Bb. Lakambini 2022” pageant highlighted the beauty and skills of Filipinos living in Kuwait. Additionally, there was an outreach program to aid fellow “Kababayans” who required assistance. However, the event’s highlight was undoubtedly the much-anticipated Pinoy Winter Olympics awarding ceremony.
The Filipino community in Kuwait demonstrated their unity and resilience by successfully organizing this event, exemplifying what can be achieved when people come together and support one another. Their commitment to celebrating their heritage and fostering strong community connections is a testament to the strength and spirit of the Filipino people.
