Concerning IWOK
The Ilokana Women’s Organization in Kuwait (IWOK), from now on referred to as “The Organization,” was established as a non-profit and non-governmental Organization in 2015 by Farida Al-Halimi, Trinidad Mariam Alzankawi and Rosita Ortiz Al Sinan collectively known as Tres Marias. The core mission of The Organization was to provide hope and assistance to individuals enduring health challenges and facing grief and sorrow. It fostered a nurturing environment dedicated to carrying out the principles of Zakat in Islam and Charity in Christianity, embracing individuals regardless of race, nationality, or creed. The aspirations of The Organization were directed toward the enhancement of education, employment, and progress for both Ilokano and non-Ilokano communities in the Philippines and Kuwait. This collective endeavor was predominantly led by women sharing a common vision of nurturing a thriving and content Filipino community.
The Organization actively extended support, participated in various humanitarian initiatives, and aided families grappling with financial hardships. Some notable initiatives included lending a helping hand to cancer patients, sponsoring outreach programs, and assisting the Filipino population during the challenging times of the COVID-19 Pandemic.
Cancer Patients Are Not Alone: IWOK’s Hugs
What could be worse than cancer? It is believing that you are waging the battle on your own. True to their objective, IWOK collaborated with Al Sidra Centre, a non-profit organization established in Kuwait Cancer Control Center (KCCC) that educates cancer patients and their families about the nature of their condition and provides help. Members went to the hospital to cheer up the patients and reassure them that they were not facing cancer alone. The assistance provided by IWOK is not restricted to Filipino patients; they also treat patients of other nationalities. IWOK’s compassion, love, and positive vibes transformed the Centre into a more welcoming and inspiring refuge.
IWOK Outreach Programs for OFW Children Bring Joy
IWOK assisted OFW children in the Philippines as part of their mission. To date, they have successfully provided educational and health services to displaced OFW children through its lobbying. Once or twice a year, the members visit their participants in the poorest areas of the Philippines. During the visitation, they carried out education, welfare monitoring, and feeding activities. In addition, IWOK provided the same events and hosted them in POLO Kuwait by offering toys, necessities, and clothing to OFW children. Hundreds of OFW children are currently benefiting from the services provided by IWOK.
We’re all in this together: IWOK assists OFW throughout the Pandemic.
During the COVID-19 Pandemic, IWOK provided interim financial aid to OFWs in Kuwait, particularly women, who faced job loss. Their efforts included distributing food, monetary allowances, and essential items for children to bridge the gap while waiting for government assistance. IWOK’s compassion and dedication have significantly alleviated the challenges faced by Filipinos amid the COVID-19 pandemic’s impact.
