What is Trashion?
On that eventful day, a new trend emerged on the vibrant streets of the Filipino Community in Kuwait – “Trashion,” as they called it. A group of enthusiastic individuals were excited to explore this unique concept. The “Trashion Show” marked a competitive platform for aspiring and gifted designers, showcasing their ability to transform discarded materials into awe-inspiring creations driven by ingenuity, inspiration, and creativity. Their remarkable journey not only showcased their budding talents but also painted a compelling narrative of the Filipino spirit – a source of pride for every “Kababayan.”
Drawing inspiration from diverse sources, their artistic endeavors mirrored the tiny fur babies they left behind at home and the remarkable lives of our Filipina Kababayans. These creative minds even dared to put a Filipino twist on an Aladdin suit, weaving stories from various walks of life to convey their hopes and aspirations for Mother Earth. From repurposing waste paper to combating water pollution and tackling plastic waste through recycling, they worked tirelessly, all driven by the collective dream of securing a better future for our children.
The “Trashion Show” kicked off amidst palpable anticipation, graced by the presence of esteemed judges known for their dedication to environmental causes. As each designer shared their unique stories and inspirations, their passion for preserving the planet resonated with the audience. They wove their tales into stunning displays of their artistic endeavors, presenting how they had breathed life into discarded materials, transforming trash into treasure, and all this in front of their fellow kababayans.
Through unwavering commitment and tireless effort, these talented individuals, united by their deep connection to Mother Earth, demonstrated their dedication to the cause. The “Trashion Show” was more than just a creative competition; it celebrated innovation, sustainability, and the enduring Filipino spirit, a testament to the power of art and community in championing a brighter future for our planet.

Tom Yumang intended to send a message to “help save Our Mother Earth” with a Birthday Party theme, using the created gown as their voice. The design demonstrated how being able to repurpose and combine waste into a gown demonstrates one’s inventiveness and how fashion can blur lines. By repurposing plastic, one of the most polluting materials in the world, to create a new, productive, and reusable product.
“Growing up in a lower-class family, I’d never had a birthday party.” Although my parents worked hard, it was merely to pay the bills and meet our family’s necessities, which I understood and appreciated. But I’ve pictured a celebration with expensive costumes, balloons, and decorations everywhere, as well as a large cake with many candles and gifts wrapped in lovely big ribbons. As I grew older and earned enough money to pursue my aspirations, I understood that, while it was huge, brilliant, and beautiful, it was destructive to our planet, which inspired me to design the gown as a tribute to Mother Earth.”

“Did you know the average person uses approximately 48 kilograms of paper annually?” If you are confused about what to do with your used paper, most will be thrown away rather than recycled. This isn’t good for the environment, which takes us to my design, which is formed of old newspapers and flyers. In general, my intention in using newspapers as my medium for production is to convey that, aside from being used to collect or read information or news, other applications for them should not be discarded. My creation will demonstrate how to recycle newspapers and make something fresh.
