Paraiso United Methodist Church (PUMC): Four Decades of Faith and Service

The ministry of the Paraiso United Methodist Church (PUMC), Tarlac City, commenced in 1980 and has since developed a rich heritage and history. The church’s enduring mission is to serve as a “heart-warming church,” touching the people’s lives in Paraiso and leading them into a relationship with Jesus Christ.

Let’s delve into the church’s humble beginnings and its first two decades, where we can witness God’s guiding hand amidst the challenges and obstacles that the Paraiso United Methodist Church (PUMC) has faced.

MISSIONARY YEARS (1980 – 1981):

PUMC began as a mission effort initiated by the Tarlac United Methodist Church, led by Pastor Roger Halili and Mrs. Juana Maglalang-Galang. Their dedication paved the way for various ministries, including Bible studies, fellowships, and Daily Vacation Church Schools, which helped spread the word of God. Several families, such as Crisostomo, Brojan, Farillas, Sahagun, and Quinton, supported these early efforts. Inspired by the growing support, Mrs. Juana Maglalang-Galang donated a portion of her property for the church building, becoming the heart of Christian worship in Paraiso.

THE FIRST DECADE OF PUMC (1981 – 1990):

Pastor Alfredo Jamet continued the ministry despite limited resources. Over the years, church membership increased as more families, including some from Tarlac UMC, joined PUMC. Between 1984 and 1986, Pastor Menre Mendillo, a dynamic preacher and musician, led the church to spiritual growth. The church expanded its outreach to nearby barangays, and a volunteer church worker, Ms. Joan Batoon, inspired young people to join the ministry. In 1988, Pastor Sol B. Madlambayan, a young pastor, took over and, despite his youth and inexperience, strengthened the church’s foundation. Under his leadership, Apung Galang donated her entire property, offering new possibilities for the church’s growth.

During this time, Pastor Racquiel Soliman and Ms. Eva Mendillo initiated the Ecumenical Kiddie Paradise, a kindergarten school focused on Christian education and academic excellence. The children’s and youth ministries flourished, and several concerts were held to proclaim God’s glory.

THE SECOND DECADE OF PUMC (1991 – 2000):

Rev. Romeo Gumabon, along with his children Dr. Ramselo Gumabon and Ms. Rochelle Gumabon, contributed their musical talents to the church, hosting concerts to glorify God. The church faced challenges as some members relocated, especially the youth pursuing education and work. However, dedicated volunteers, deaconesses, and pastors helped the church recover. Rev. Elmer N. Bayangos played a crucial role in this recovery, building rapport with members and facilitating home Bible studies. Renovations and improvements were made to the church building, and the congregation grew. The youth were actively involved in teaching Sunday schools and Daily Vacation Church Schools.

THE THIRD DECADE OF PUMC (2002 – 2010):

During the early 2000s, PUMC’s workers and members faced challenges that tested their faith and trust in God. In 2004, the church established the JOY Ecumenical Christian Academy Incorporated, providing preschool and elementary education.

THE FOURTH DECADE OF PUMC (2011-2020):

Rev. Elmer Bayangos served as Administrative Pastor for 13 years, inspiring members to share their talents and support the church. Various pastors took up the leadership mantle, and the church experienced growth and decline. Through it all, the church held onto God’s promise, striving to be a heartwarming church. Rev. Dr. Miller B. Tadeo was appointed as Administrative Pastor in June 2022 and continues to lead the church.
