A Family Affair
The concept of family is encapsulated within a single six-letter word, and its significance in our lives cannot be understated. Whether by choice or circumstance, the term “family” carries tremendous weight.
Filipinos are renowned for their rich tapestry of values and traditions, with strong familial bonds being one of their most celebrated traits. “Family comes first,” they say, and Filipinos hold their families in the highest regard from the moment of birth to the journey into adulthood. But what, exactly, defines a family? Is it constituted by marriage alone, even in the absence of children? Can a family exist when a single parent raises a child? These profound questions about the true essence of family are explored in the heartwarming short film “A Family Affair: A True Story of Love.”
Josue Rivera’s short film earned the honor of being selected for the 7th Sorok Short Film Festival, which revolved around the theme of “Singlehood: A Parent. A Child. A Journey.” The Sorok Short Film Festival (SSFF) is a significant fundraising event organized by the Sorok Uni Foundation, Inc., aimed at showcasing the rich pool of Filipino filmmaking talent while fostering social consciousness in the Philippines. Additionally, its objectives include the promotion of Filipino talents within the filmmaking industry, the advancement of social awareness in the Philippines, providing filmmakers with opportunities to showcase their skills, potentially serving as a stepping stone to opportunities both locally and internationally, and facilitating the sharing of expertise through creative workshops. A benefit film screening hosted by Sorok took place at the Teatro in Fort Santiago from December 1 to 3, 2022. The proceeds from the SSFF Rewind were allocated to nourish 209 Mangyan students from the Inawa Panaynep Elementary School and 137 students from the Libagon Minority School, both in Sablayan, Occidental Mindoro.
The narrative of “A Family Affair” is woven around the life of a young girl, portrayed by Yzabelle Precious, raised solely by her father, portrayed by Dennis “Ali” Carlos, following her mother’s mysterious disappearance. As the girl ages, her mother’s memories linger in her thoughts, yet she carries no bitterness or resentment. This father-daughter journey is a profound emotional roller coaster that delves into the depths of love, loss, and the enduring bonds of family. For those who watch it, be prepared to reach for the Kleenex, for this film will indeed move you to tears and leave you with profound realizations as the story unfolds to its touching conclusion.
